Pet Grooming Questions And Answers |
Q. How often should I get my dog groomed? A. Depending on what type of breed or mixed breed you have, grooming may be as much as once a month, 6 weeks or 8 weeks...dogs such as poodles,Shih tzu's , Lhasa apso, Schnauzer's, Maltese's, Cocker Spaniels, Bichon Frise, ect, should be groomed anywhere from every 4 weeks to 8 weeks. Other breeds of dogs such as Golden Retrievers, Collies, German Shepherd's, Newfoundland's, Great Pyrenees, should be groomed anywhere from every 8 weeks to 15 weeks depending on how much the owner brushes them. Short coated dogs such as Labrador Retrievers, Dalmatians, Dobermans should be done at least 4 times a year. Every dog is different and may shed more or become more stinky than others. This is just a general idea, you may get them groomed more often or less depending on your dog, and his and your needs. Q. How often should I get my dogs nails trimmed? A. This all depends on if your dog is young or old, and if he or she can wear them down. a good general rule is, if you can hear them clicking they need to be trimmed. If I might also add, over grown nails can cause problems such as getting them stuck in carpets and other material and pulling them off, or curling around and growing into the pad of the foot(very painful). Or causing the dog to become crippled. Q. Can I get my dog groomed in the winter? A. YES.. you can have your dog groomed all year long, and you should, to keep their coat free of mat's and foreign objects. A professional grooming shop is heated and will make sure your dog is completely dry before it go's home..(you bathe in the winter don't you?) Q. Do grooming shops use tranquilizers? A. As best to my knowledge most groomers are not veterinarians. Since tranquilizers are a controlled substance, it would be against the law for a groomer to administer them. So the answer would be NO. If your dogs is tired or sleeps for the rest of the day after being at the grooming shop. More than likely it's because your dog may get excited or anxious and this would make him tired. Not that grooming is a bad experience just an over stimulated one sometimes. If you have any questions about grooming please feel free to e-mail me, I would love to hear from you. sonny@semol.com |
